Rock Art

The archeological sites with rock art can be found from north to south and usually turned to the eastern side ocean. The main sites can be found at Ingleses, Santinho and Campeche Island. The oldest to notice is about 4500 years old.
The petroglyphs follow geometric patterns like concentric circles, zigzag parallel lines and also anthropomorphic figures. They show some very particular characteristics, with no similarity in other places, what makes impossible any kind of parallelism.
Campeche Island, in particular, has the largest concentration of sites with a total of 167 inscriptions and many yet to be found. Interpretations of this art vary but it is a fact that it is difficult to judge it in terms of present perceptions.
The sites have also been suffering vandalism and depredation over the years and many have disappeared.
